Mélanie Renaud, Oxfam-Québec's Ambassador for Haïti
Born in Haiti and adopted by a Québec family at the age of nine months, Melanie Renaud had never been back to the country of her birth. In 2006, after a long career, she decided to visit it before going on with producing her new album. When she came home, she was determined to become involved, and she undertook to be Oxfam-Québec's ambassador for Haiti.
Back in Montréal, Melanie felt she had to do something after all she had seen. "I had to get involved. Then I found out about Oxfam-Québec. I came to know the organization and I readily understood that its great strength is to build partnerships with local people and organizations. That's the best way to be really effective in the field."
Blessed with a charismatic personality and a powerful voice, Melanie is one of those who knew early on what they wanted. At the age of 16, she took part in the International Singing Festival at Granby. At 18, she recorded a song, Mon ange, with Eric Lapointe and then went on tour with him through Québec. When she was 19 she launched her first album, Ma liberté, which won the Juno award for Francophone album of the year. Three years later, her second album came out, entitled simply Melanie Renaud. In 2005, she played the role of Esmeralda in Luc Plamondon’s operetta Notre Dame de Paris, which took her all the way to France
In 2008, Melanie stormed back with her third album, Feux d’artifice.
