Annie Lennox, Oxfam ambassador and AIDS activist
Annie Lennox has been involved with Oxfam as a Global Ambassador since 2005. She is a passionate and committed campaigner who has lobbied the G8 and other world leaders, focussing particularly on HIV and AIDS.
Annie is currently in Mexico representing Oxfam at the 2008 International AIDS Conference. Drawing on her personal experiences of working with people with HIV and AIDS, Annie will lobby for universal access to treatment for HIV-positive people, and draw attention to the lack of health workers available.
“The Conference cannot be another talking-shop that regurgitates what is needed in order to win the battle against the HIV epidemic. A plan of action and clear political will to win the war against HIV and AIDS must come out of it.
“I bring my support to Oxfam in calling for more funding, stronger health systems and to increase access to millions for affordable medicines. I am only one voice amongst many here in Mexico, but I intend to make it resonate loud and clear.”
“I am in this fight for the long term and proud to stand side by side with Oxfam and its work."
In 2007, Annie Lennox teamed up with 23 of the world’s most acclaimed female voices for the charity single SING, to raise money and awareness for the HIV/AIDS organization, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC). Oxfam has partnered with TAC for a number of years, helping to fund the programme and has an ongoing strategic alliance - supporting workshops and the production of media around issues related to HIV and AIDS.
