Mother's Day is a special time to say "thank you!" to mothers everywhere, and to remind them how much we cherish their presence. This year, celebrate Mother's Day by sending a free e-card. Even today, too many mothers and future mothers are dying during pregnancy and childbirth because they have no proper medical care. The situation is especially alarming in sub-Saharan Africa, where the maternal mortality rate is a thousand times higher than in rich countries.[1]

In many countries, maternal mortality rates have dropped sharply, thanks to free and universally available healthcare. In Sri Lanka, for example, where a third of the population lives on less than two dollars a day, the maternal mortality rate is one of the lowest in the world.
