For All! Water: A few tips for consuming water more responsibly

A few changes in your daily habits can save thousands of liters of water every year. Environment Canada offers these helpful tips to help save our precious reserves:

In the bathroom:

  • When shaving, partially fill the sink instead of running the tap continuously. You will save about 60% of the water normally used.

  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth. Use short bursts of water for cleaning your brush. This will save up to 80% of the water used by running the tap continously.

  • Take shorter showers – five minutes or less should do.

  • For a bath, insert the plug and run the hot water. Only run cold water to adjust the temperature once the water is hot enough. Only fill the tub halfway.

  • Install a low-flush toilent. You’ll reduce water usage by 40% to 50%.

  • Only flush the toilet when you need to. Do not use it as wastebasket, or to dispose of paint, solvents or other chemicals.
In the kitchen:

  • Turn the taps off completely to avoid dripping.

  • Keep a bottle of drinking water in your refrigerator, so as to avoid running the tap until the water gets cool enough for you.

  • Do not run the water continuously when hand-washing dishes.

  • Run the electric dishwasher only when it is full.

  • Wash fruit and vegetables in a partially filled sink, rather than under a running tap.
In the garden and yard:

  • Wash your car by filling a bucket with water and using a sponge. This can save about 300 litres of water.

  • Clean sidewalks and driveways with a broom rather than a hose.

  • Water lawns every three to five days, rather than for a short period every day. Do it at dawn or dusk, during the cool parts of the day.
