Oxfam-Québec has worked with the people of Benin through various development projects since 1985.
Because of the transition to a democratic government in 1990, our regular activities within government and paragovernment structures have decreased and our efforts are now directed toward national non-governmental organizations and community development associations.
In 1996, a regional office for West Africa was established in Cotonou, Benin to supervise activities in Benin, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
In January 1998, the regional office became a national office so it could assume full responsibility for the development and implementation of programs in Benin.
Following the integration of CLUB 2/3 and Oxfam-Québec’s activities in 2005, the national office in Cotonou resumed its mission as the regional office for Benin and Togo. This decision comes in response to new needs and is beneficial in that it steps up the development of youth activities with local partners in Benin.
Oxfam-Québec’s activities, which are mainly aimed at women and youth, are currently being carried out in both rural and urban areas and are focused on four regions: Atlantique, Oueme, Collines and Littoral.
Oxfam-Québec also carries out projects for Intermon Oxfam in Benin.
