History of Oxfam-Québec in the country:

Oxfam-Québec has been working in Nicaragua since 1985. Its projects focused mainly on women and children living in rural zones affected by the war.

From 1991 to 1994, Oxfam-Québec broadened its programme with institutional strengthening activities; this resulted in turning the focus of its projects to the capital.

In 1995–1996, Oxfam-Québec was involved in the reconciliation process by helping demobilized soldiers in rural areas and assisting women workers in the free trade zones, which permitted the creation of the Central American Network of Women in Solidarity with Maquila Workers.

Beginning in 1996–1997, with the development of a clearer regional vision, food security became a central priority that would lead Oxfam-Québec to strengthen its programmes focusing on women in rural areas.

Today, Oxfam-Québec, in partnership with the Guy Laliberté Foundation, is managing a sustainable development project aimed at poverty reduction, food security, and environmental preservation. The office working on this project doubles as Oxfam-Québec’s representative office in the country.
