One month after the floods first reached disastrous levels in Pakistan, the flood waters continue to rise with 500,000 people forced to evacuate their homes in recent days. Many areas are still cut off and millions of people are in desperate need of immediate help.
As the aid effort struggles to respond to the increasing catastrophe, international aid agency Oxfam today warned that reconstruction efforts must begin immediately to avoid devastating long-term consequences for the country.

Ottawa (August 24, 2010)- Two weeks into a joint appeal launched by the members of the HUMANITARIAN COALITION, flooding is worsening in Pakistan and member agencies and their partners are on the ground in Pakistan helping to alleviate the suffering of millions.
Just a few examples of activities the member organizations are undertaking:
2010-08-24Floods and heavy rains across Niger have destroyed crops less than two months before harvest, compounding the country’s existing food crisis, said international aid agency Oxfam. Flooding has killed at least six people, left thousands homeless, ruined crops and forced hungry families to crisis point.
“Many crops and vegetables that would have provided crucial food to hungry families have been destroyed by floods. People who were praying for rains for their crops to grow have now lost everything,” said Raphael Sindaye, Oxfam’s Deputy Regional Director in West Africa.2010-08-24
