Agricultural Trade Policy in Developing Countries During Take-Off

July 2006 This study explores the experiences of six economically successful developing countries. South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Chile and Botswana all used agriculture and trade policies as part of their take-off strategy.
The paper raises important concerns that the current direction of agricultural trade liberalization in the WTO and elsewhere could unfairly restrict ‘policy space’ for those developing countries seeking to emulate the success of countries such as Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia
