The Premier of Québec, Jean Charest, has announced $3 million in emergency financial assistance for Haitians affected by the January 12 earthquake. Of that amount, $1 million will go to Oxfam-Québec.

« We thank the Québec government for this support and this show of confidence. Oxfam-Québec has been active in Haiti since 1983. We know the ground well and we have forged strong links with local partners. Many of them have been hard hit by the earthquake, but they are already up and running on an emergency basis. We will be helping them later with reconstruction », explains Pierre Véronneau, Executive Director of Oxfam-Québec.

In coming days, aid priority will still go to search and rescue operations and to providing water, medical care, shelter and food. To this end, we are already working in collaboration with our field team and with those of other members of the Oxfam family (Oxfam UK and Oxfam Intermon-Spain) that are on the ground in Haïti.»
