A force for change
Janet, from the Santa Rosa district near Lima in Peru, proved to be a real force for change in 2020, when she actively participated in the founding of the anti-COVID committee. This leading activist wasted no time in taking matters into her own hands to protect and serve her community during the darkest months of the pandemic. With the invaluable support of Oxfam and its local partner, the committee was able to reach hundreds of people, offering them vital support.
When COVID-19 hit their community hard, the anti-COVID committee acted with determination. Its members devoted themselves to caring for the children of sick parents and bringing food to those weakened by the disease.
“It’s an affront to us to put money before life. People are dying in Santa Rosa and we’re being ignored. We first set up an anti-COVID committee. We organized a March for Life to get help from the authorities. The media covered it. This attracted the attention of Peru’s Ministry of Health. We would report the cases and the Ministry would take care of the follow-up, the treatments, the doctor would travel, monitor the situation.”
A troubling reality
Janet did not hesitate to point the finger at a disturbing reality. Today, she embodies hope and determination in a world in crisis, proving that citizen action can make a real difference in saving lives and promoting social justice.
“Our hearts ache because deaths would have been avoided if the state had really cared about the health of the population. This neoliberal model gives priority to profits. How can we explain that the pharmaceutical industry and clinics made millions during the pandemic?”
